Nick Joaquin

Nick Joaquin is one of the prominent authors in the Philippines during American Era. Although he is a native Spanish speaker, all of his writings are fluent in the use of English medium. Because of his nature of being good in Spanish and English, there are some Spanish words and deep English words in the novel.

His level of writing is similar to the style of Jose Rizal – full of insinuation and imagery to let the readers’ minds imagine the significance of what is happening and relate it to the history. He also uses allusions to prove his point.

The novel “The Woman who had Two Navels” is comparable to “Noli Me Tangere” by Jose Rizal. They are the same in terms of revealing the social problems of the Filipinos during a period of time.

His famous works include:

  • May Day Eve (1947)
  • Prose and Poems (1952)
  • A Question of Heroes (1977)

among the others he had written in his lifetime.
